Voices United is a Miami-based nonprofit organization that fosters cross-cultural understanding and youth action through creative expression, empowering our youth to become tolerant and caring leaders for a better future.
YALS Leadership Forum participant explores creativity through images with her peers standing in a circle of peace to represent what they care about.
The Voices United Leadership Forum focuses on developing leadership skills with a creative twist through Leadership Training, Leadership Development Activities, and the Country Creation Project. There are 3 major components, leadership training, leadership development activities, and the Country Creation Project. Participants will learn about the fundamentals and essentials of leadership and explore their strengths and come to understand what will make them a more effective leader. Ultimately, they discover what they can do to make a difference in their community when they return home and the VU staff is there to help them make that happen. They participate in group activities that teach team building, group dynamics, communication, consensus building, conflict resolution and leadership.
The Peace Project
The Every 28 Hours Plays were created as a response to the statistic that every 28 hours, a black person is killed by the police in the United States. In October 2015, a series of 1 minute pieces were written and performed via staged reading.
Voices United is the only partner theater organization that works exclusively with youth. We have taken on the piece of creating a youth response and adding that to the pieces already created. Using the VU Process, our participants will deep dive into their experiences and create a unique work that stands to be powerful and impactful for all involved. We are the first in the nation to take on this work in this way!
The project will travel to venues across South Florida. At each venue, whether park, school, or community center, there will be a performance of the works created. Each location receives a multi-day workshop experience with VU trained artists. The resulting work is a multidisciplinary, youth-driven response and presentation. VU staff lead the initial programs, but as Youth Leaders are identified, they are trained and lead programs at partnering venues (with the support of VU staff/volunteers). These are paid internship opportunities for the rising leaders.
Hundreds of participants will be engaged throughout the the program. After the final performance, participants identified as rising leaders are invited to participate in the Voices United Leadership Forum.
