Historically Significant Public Space
Historic Virginia Key Beach Park is an 82-acre Beach Park listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the State of Florida Heritage Trail, and City of Miami Historic and Environmental Preservation site list.
This unique open space provides historical, environmental, and recreational programs and activities for its 100,000 plus visitors annually.
A Museum will be constructed on the Historic Beach Park site to provide a unique interpretive public space that highlights the rich cultural history of the Park, South Florida African American contributions, and civic and community activism.
We are committed to the preservation and ongoing maintenance of the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park’s (HVKBP) natural eco-systems. The unique plant and endangered animal varieties that converge at HVKBP give testament to some of the oldest surviving flora and fauna species in South Florida.
The Park participates in several environmental studies in partnership with universities and environmental groups. HVKBP hosts ongoing environmental cleanups, tours and educational programs to foster greater awareness of the eco-system, sustainability, and how to proactively make better choices to save the planet.
Park Cultural History and Educational Tours
Visitors can experience a historical tour replicating the experience and facilities guests of the 1940’s and 50’s had. Part of the Park’s significance is many of the upscale amenities were modeled after the nearby Crandon Beach which was unheard of for people of color during segregation. Learn about the soldiers who trained here, early Indian tribes who settled here, and the summer cottages where many families stayed when they visited.
Recreational Activities and Amusements
Many have fond memories of family cookouts, reunions, and weddings that they have attended at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. On weekends the Historic Mini Train and Historic Carousel are in demand by children wanting endless rides. There is always something for active youth and adults. Most days the soccer field, modern play playgrounds, volleyball courts, and Disc Golf are filled with eager participants.
Community Events and Festivals
Historic Virginia Key Beach Park is a site of numerous special events with attendees surpassing 15,000 for our largest events. From arts and culture to music festivals, there is something for everyone. The Park’s open space and ample parking make it a great location for large events. Miami New Times named Historic Virginia Key Beach Park as the 2018 Best Live Music Venue.
