ABOUT NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover the 30-day period from September 15 through October 15. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.
Each February, ELEVATE offers a Day of Programming, Tools and Workshops for being NICER - to our mind, body, soul, planet & others.
BEING A BETTER PERSON - through what we eat, how we take care of ourselves, how we treat ourselves and how we treat others.
Many of us find some, most or all of these topics difficult to follow in our daily lives. Add the pressures of family, peers, ageing, economy & surroundings, and it often becomes overwhelming. This is where Unity Coalition|Coalicion Unida’s 3rd annual ELEVATE Program comes in. Over 14 workshops & activities await you on Sunday, February 5th, 2017, 9am to 4pm, and the beautiful and serene settings on the Miami Beach Botanical Garden at 2000 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach, Fl 33139.
Activities are presented throughout the indoor & outdoor classrooms of the gardens campus, and will include: A healthy Breakfast & Lunch; Borba Yoga & meditation in the Garden; Spiritual makeover with Lifestyle coach & Kundalini Yoga with CARLOS ANAYA; Tools for being happier & less toxic with Life Coach THEA SOMMER; Personal growth through Poetry with CARIDAD MORO-GRONLIER; Licensed Marriage and Family therapist BILLIE GIMENEZ; Painting in the GARDEN with Painting with a twist’s DAVID SEXTON; Urban Habitat gardening with HOWARD TONKIN; Spirituality, Sexuality & Religious Tolerance Panel discussion with South Florida spiritual leaders, and moderated by HAROLD SLOAN-MARRERO. Friends of Dorothy Series
FRIENDS OF DOROTHY Series is about Rebuilding our Lost History, & Inspirations for a new Generation.
Showcasing a series of LGBT Speakers, Community Leaders & Topics, focused on Empowering, Inspiring & Motivating our next generation of leaders.
Millennial LGBT’s have been short changed.
Discrimination, Hate Crimes and the harsh realities of AIDS, critically impacted on the establishment or development of an intellectually rich, culturally vibrant and knowledgeable generation – creating a void of leaders & role models for our younger generation. Often left with little more than social media & reality TV for guidance, our millennial generation needs –we all need– something positive to aspire to. Good role models. True leaders. Visionaries that show us it IS POSSIBLE to be LGBT and successful, respected and capable of greatness.
