The Miami Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Community, in cooperation with our partners and community stakeholders, will work to reduce the prevalence, impact and consequences of all forms of substance abuse, drug addiction, crime and related social issues through education, advocacy, research and coordination of community services.
Youth Dialogue Day event was hosted by South Miami High School's Cobrawesomeness club and sponsored by the South Miami Drug-Free Coalition. Students were eager to lead discussions and share their thoughts and concerns throughout the morning as the conversations progressed speed-dating style, with adults moving tables to talk to different groups of teens. Margaret Sotham, Director of the South Miami Drug-Free Coalition, welcomed more than 70 students and community leaders to the event, asking them to lay down their doubts and open their ears, and encouraging the adults to take advantage of the opportunity to see the world again through the eyes of a young person. Throughout the event, students and adults shared thoughts on a 'thought wall' resembling a giant iPhone and used discussion guides to help identify solutions. The event concluded with feedback session as well as a preview performance of "Identity Theft," an original production of Street to Stage.
Our Partners at Westland Mall invited the Hialeah Community Coalition (HCC) to participate in the "Back to School" Backpack Giveaway, which is an annual community event in partnership with The Children's Trust to bring families together to the center for informational city programs, Fashion Show, entertainment and more. The event was held August 2016 from 10am-4pm at Westland Mall. Coalition Director, Elizabeth Garcia, represented The HCC by manning a table to make educational materials on alcohol and drug prevention available for participating families. The event was well attended, information well received, and over 3,000 kids received much needed supplies!
