Hospital Buddy Program
StudentsCare's Hospital Buddy program provides direct support to children and families battling long-term illness and increases empathy among aspiring medical professionals.
Buddies assemble care kits with items that bring children comfort; create personalized photo books so families can commemorate special events; create decorative door signs to help normalize the hospital environment for children; and celebrate birthdays, end-of-chemo, and holidays. They also engage children in hospital playrooms in activities like arts and crafts, movies, and reading. In post-program responses, 76% of StudentsCare volunteers reported that they comforted a parent or guardian, and 85% of volunteers have stayed with a patient so parents could take a break.
Overall, Hospital Buddies help offer seriously ill children and families a temporary reprieve from the physical and emotional demands of hospitalization.
StudentsCare volunteers provide critical direct support that can result in improved healthcare outcomes for patients and increase patient and family satisfaction.
