Youth Dialogue Day - South Miami High School
The annual Youth Dialogue Day event was hosted by South Miami High School's Cobrawesomeness club and sponsored by the South Miami Drug-Free Coalition. Students were eager to lead discussions and share their thoughts and concerns throughout the morning as the conversations progressed speed-dating style, with adults moving tables to talk to different groups of teens. More than 70 Students and community leaders attended. Conversations included topics such as: academic pressures, school and community safety, alcohol and drug use and volunteerism, community service. A "thought wall" was created so that all attendees could list their concerns and issues.
Coalition members conduct environmental scans of retail establishments that sell alcohol. Scans determined whether these retailers were in compliance with laws regarding signage in retail establishments. These signs indicate that the retailer will ask every purchaser for I.D. and uphold the law that no one under the age of 21 is able to purchase alcohol.
