The Festival In The Desert Caravan series
In 2019, the series that started as Axis of Love returns in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts as The Festival In The Desert Caravan series which provides a home away from home for Mali’s now defunct famous festival. In 2012 Mali suffered a socio-political turmoil when the country fell into extremist occupation. The Festival in the Desert of Timbuktu, which had become one of the most famous cultural events in Africa, could not continue because the extremist occupation was hostile to any festival event and banned music in Northern Mali. As a part of the Caravan of Artists for Peace and Resilience, we stand in solidarity with these artists. With support from the NEA and the Doris Duke Foundation, The Rhythm Foundation and MDC Live Arts create an opportunity to build a connection with cultures primarily in the public eye for conflict zones.
