Real Estate & Economic Development
Since the mid-1980s OLCDC has successfully completed several projects in the areas of economic development and affordable housing. OLCDC has worked with private developers, businesses, community organizations and government agencies to build affordable housing, revitalize businesses, and improve the overall quality of life in Opa-locka and neighborhood cities. We have developed multi-family housing over 2,500 units, constructed 118 single-family housing homes, and rehabilitated 87 homes.
Arts & Creative Industry
OLCDC, with the support of several foundations, private and public organizations over the past four years, started an arts initiative to help revitalize the Opa-locka area by bringing arts programming and Creative opportunities to the local community. Opa-locka, with a unique Arabian Nights-inspired architectural style and more than 70 historic Moorish Revival buildings, is envisioned to be one of Miami-Dade's next cultural hubs. In 2014, it acquired and renovated an old warehouse in downtown Opa-locka as The Arts & Recreation Center (The ARC) to serve as the hub for its cultural and educational programming. OLCDC is well on its way in implementing a creative engagement strategy where arts play a central role in improving the quality of life of its residents and bringing economic development to the area.
The OLCDC is committed to increasing quality educational opportunities for Opa-locka residents by devising and helping to implement a cradle-to-career continuum.
"Keeping Our Promise," an educational initiative of the OLCDC, is the outcome of the holistic approach developed in response of improving educational performance of students attending schools in Opa-locka. OLCDC with the support of The Children's Trust has started two new educational programs in 2015: 1) a parenting program, a project to engage parents in the improvement of their child's academics and overall relationship between parent and child, and 2) a year-round after-school program offered at two middle schools and two high schools teaching Coding, Mathematics and Life Skills. OLCDC is also an approved HUD Housing Counseling Agency that provides homebuyer classes to prepare residents to qualify for home purchases and meet homeowner responsibilities.
Health & Social Services
OLCDC is working with several partners to improve residents' access to quality health opportunities and services. OLCDC, partners, and residents are working towards eliminating barriers to healthcare services, physical activity, and a healthier lifestyle through an increase in residents' health knowledge, access to physical activity opportunities, and health and wellness services. Projects include a Health Partnership, Health and Resource Fair, and more.
OLCDC has led several comprehensive community planning processes in partnership with community members, national experts, and local government. The goal is to engage residents into a final transformation which will result into a revitalized and vibrant community of choice where residents can identify priorities and as a team, and develop strategies to improve living assets, streets, parks, and innovated projects to positively impact into the residents' environment while enhancing their sense of pride and ownership over their community.
