BRINGING ORAL HEALTH TO CHILDREN IN MIAMI SCHOOLS
NSU College of Dental Medicine faculty are in the Miami Dade County Public Schools teaching students about the importance of dental health care and providing necessary oral health services.
Smiles Across Miami
NSU College of Dental Medicine (CDM) Smiles Across Miami brings quality oral health services to underserved and primarily uninsured school children in Miami-Dade County through oral health education, diagnostic, preventive, and treatment services. The goal of the program is to identify oral diseases early and improve access to vitally needed oral healthcare for Miami Dade school children most at risk, and their families thereby reducing health disparities and improving health and social equity.
The program also trains all the medical staff, approximately 200, associated with the Children's Trust Health Connect in Our Schools (HCiOS) Program in Miami-Dade County to provide preventive oral health services to children in all Miami-Dade County schools. This project integrates oral health education, preventive, and referral services into school health care delivery systems that have wide reach. Approximately 145 schools and 35,000 children are impacted.
