Daniel Lewis Miami Dance Sampler
Miami Dance Futures and the Florida Dance Education Organization are the economic funding source for the Daniel Lewis Miami Dance Sampler. In the fourth year since Dance NOW! Miami revived Daniel Lewis' decade-running acclaimed Miami Dance Sampler; the weekend of performances is a testimony to the continuing growth of Miami's homegrown dance community. South Florida staples such as Siempre Flamenco and Momentum Dance Company will join the stage with choreographer and Knight Arts Challenge winner Hattie Mae Williams/The Tattoed Ballerina and Colleen Farnum's Atma Yoga Dance Company.
'This showcase is a rare opportunity to get a glimpse of what the year in Dance has to offer' says DNM Co-Director Hannah Baumgarten. 'All of these groups will have performances throughout the year. This is not just a festival, it is truly a season preview. And it should note be missed.'
Participating groups include Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, Atma Yoga Dance Company, Dance NOW! Miami
Support of Young Choreographer
This year we are supporting the work of Miami choreographer Christopher Rudd.
Mr. Rudd began dancing at the age of 9 in Miami, FL at the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet (TAYB). Through the auspices of the TAYB Scholarship Program, Mr. Rudd pursued a classical ballet path. Just two years later, Mr. Rudd became the first black person in the US to dance the title role in Balanchine's The Nutcracker, an accomplishment for which ABC's Peter Jennings named him Person of the Week in 1991. A graduate of New World School of the Arts (NWSA) in Miami, Mr. Rudd has performed with such companies as Alberta Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Carolina Ballet - of which he was a founding member - and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal, where he rose to the rank of soloist. He also worked on the creation and danced for Cirque Du Soleil's Zaia, Cirque's first resident show in Asia.
