MDC Live Arts fosters cultural and intellectual exchange by presenting outstanding performances and educational activities from around the globe that strengthen relationships between artists, students, and the community at large. To meet this goal, the MDC Live Arts Season consists of objectives built into the MDC Live Arts Lab and the Performance Series. Made up of several streams, the Performance Series features Live Arts Mundo which explores world cultures through the presentation of music, theater, and dance from around the globe; Live Arts In Focus shines a light on some of the most pressing social issues of today effecting American life and culture; Live Arts On Site presents performance in unconventional settings to expand cultural experience to audiences wherever they may be. Featuring two programs each across these streams, MDC Live Arts will present a variety of artists from across the globe representing a diverse range of voices and forms. MDC Live Arts Lab aims to provide space (a 120-seat theatre) and opportunity for locally-based artists to work and to further their practices. MDC Live Arts Lab expects to serve 300-450 performing artists a year through classes, workshops, critical feedback and discourse. Programming consists of several parts: the Live Arts Lab Alliance where six artists are selected for residency and commission; the Test Lab, an open mic-style monthly event, and Lab Chats, providing critical discussions on art topics and responses to programs.
