The Keri Heiken Fund was set up after our daughter, Keri, 18 years old, was tragically killed in a car accident on her way back to college in November, 1998. Keri was an honor student at North Miami Beach Senior High School, a young democrat leader and just starting out as a political science major at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Her dream was to become a lawyer and later a judge. She understood the importance of giving back to her community, along with the value of an education. The Keri Heiken Fund awards scholarships to high school seniors for their continuing education. The student recipients of the scholarships also understand the importance of an education and giving back. They want to follow in the footsteps of Keri's aspirations. Whether it be in politics or other forums, these seniors are determined to give back to the community. To date, forty scholarships have been given out and each of the scholarship recipients has excelled in their fields. Many of the recipients give back to the community as lawyers, doctors, judges, psychologist, and social workers. They do pro bono work for our community. We hope to continue this pattern by giving out more and more scholarships to deserving students.
