Historic Hampton House Community Trust, Inc
The Historic Hampton House Community Trust, Inc. provides historic preservation for the Hampton House Motel. It is a building used for the purpose of preserving the unique period of cultural history that is represented by the Historic Hampton House property and providing a forum for educational, cultural and historic activities for residents and visitors to Greater Miami. The Historic Hampton House Community Trust will raise funds to complete the construction of the building with efforts such as our Awards Luncheon, "Give Miami," and seeking corporate sponsors.
Brownsville Unity Music Project (BUMP)
An intensive youth music and history mentorship program conducted in partnership with Florida International University’s Department of History and University of Miami’s Frost School of Music Donna Shalala Music Reach Program.
Hampton House Blues and Jazz in the House
The Trust also provides its monthly Hampton House Blues and Jazz in the House music series, respectively held the 2nd and last Friday of each month. The series features the best local blues and jazz acts in the Hampton’s House multipurpose banquet hall, which was once the site of a legendary jazz lounge.
Miami Jazz & Film Society and FIU’s African and African Diaspora Studies Program
During Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 semesters, the series will be connected to History and African & African Diaspora Studies classes taught at FIU. Students and professors from those classes will meet at the Hampton House for public film screenings followed by discussions with audience members about the themes and topics addressed in the films. During the summer, MJFS will host additional screenings. Thought provoking films dealing with issues such as immigration, race, cultural change, and gender will provide opportunities for lively discussions between the community, students, and academics about a wide range of historical and contemporary topics. The project therefore uses film and the museum space to foster public discourse and create a broad platform for sharing and creating knowledge. The project is a winner of the 2017 Knight Arts Challenge Miami.
Annual History Harvest Event
Each February, the public is invited to share their stories and memorabilia about the Hampton House and Brownsville. The oral histories and artifacts collected become part of the Hampton House archive for potential use in future exhibits. Objects displayed throughout the museum’s exhibition spaces are carefully selected by the Trust’s staff and collaborators to reflect the Hampton House’s history of diversity and inclusion. The Trust’s inaugural exhibit Social Center of the South: The Past and Present of the Historic Hampton House opened April 2018. The exhibit along with the Hampton House facility itself is the focus of the Trust’s daily tours.
