Friends of South Florida Music (FSFM) sponsors Music FUNdamentals, a weekly 30-minute music class for early elementary age students. The program includes age-appropriate musical activities that stimulate learning and enjoyment while enhancing brain development. It incorporates onsite training and mentoring for classroom teachers on how to implement the activities. Parents are encouraged to join in the experience by completing fun and easy musical activities at home. All participants engage in a final performance that is free of charge and open to the public.
Research shows that music intervention is an extremely cost-efficient means to increase a child’s potential through the early elementary age. Participation contributes positively to children’s school readiness, their self-regulation ability, and their mental health condition. Simultaneously, teachers will learn positive, child-appropriate management strategies through observing the children’s growing self-control and expression.
FSFM pays for program teachers, and provides all program musical instruments and materials. The program started at Frederick Douglass Elementary and Key Biscayne K-8 Center in Miami in spring 2018, and will expand to also include Ethel K. Beckford/Richmond PLC this school year. We hope to continue expanding to include other schools in underserved areas of Miami-Dade County. FSFM's leadership and its associated instructors have decades of experience and advanced training in music education.
