Black Top Hoops Tournament
The Coconut Grove Black Top Basketball Tournament started in 2003 by the Elizabeth Virrick Park Committee, Inc. a non-profit .
In the past, the tournament has attracted and been attended by many celebrities such as Carlos Boozer, Dwayne Wade, Udonis Haslem, Dorrell Wright and James Jones all of the National Basketball Association (NBA) along with Dave Thomas, Jevon Kearse and Andre Johnson all of the National Football League (NFL). The tournament has even had team sponsorships from NFL stars, Chad Ochocinco and Frank Gore and Miami’s own national recording artist Maurice “Trick Daddy” Young.
The Coconut Grove-Black Top Hoops Basketball Tournament will offer the under-served community of the City of Miami, the opportunity to once again unify at Elizabeth Virrick Park for community competition, socializing and entertainment, while enjoying and experiencing a wholesome and safe environment.
Our mission: To provide a fun and safe haven where community members of all ages can come out compete and enjoy a positive atmosphere of good food and music, while raising the awareness of our after-school tutoring programs, evening practices and ongoing weekend games and promoting non-violence through athletics.
Essence of Dance Program
Essence Of Dance is a dance studio program conducted at Elizabeth Virrick Park. Instruction is provided for girls between the ages of 7 through 14 years. Dance Genres: lyrical, hip-hop, tap, jazz & ballet. The girls practice on weekdays after school and compete in dance competitions. This team also represents the community in parades and local events.
After School Tutoring
Free after school tutoring is provided to the elementary school students attending the Elizabeth Virrick Park after-school program. The tutoring is provided by certified Miami Dade County educators and has yielded improved results in homework completion and test readiness.
STEMtrunk Afterschool Program
STEMtrunk is a subscription lending library for the best K-8th grade STEM (Science / Technology / Engineering / Math) toys in the world. Elizabeth Virrick Park will be one of the founding locations for offering after school STEM, Coding and Robotics courses to local children.
