RiseUp's unique blend of entrepreneurial, mindfulness and emotional intelligence training helps previously incarcerated individuals not only survive upon release, but thrive.
RiseUp is addressing the alarming increase in the prison population - approximately 700% since the 1970s. The U.S. has become the world leader in incarceration. It has only 5% of the world’s population, but 25% of its prisoners. The system is broken. Incarcerated individuals are not rehabilitated, often leaving prison worse than when they arrived. This has created a revolving door: 7 out of 10 individuals will return to prison.
RiseUp teaches students the basics of entrepreneurship and how to create a business plan. At the end of the program, there is a Shark Tank-like competition. The winner receives job placement assistance, support and mentorship upon their release.
We also help individuals cultivate emotional intelligence through mindfulness meditation, so they are less reactive to their thoughts and emotions.
Transforming individuals that are at-risk, have been arrested or have already been incarcerated into a new breed of mindful entrepreneurs can help reduce recidivism, promote public safety, and positively impact the vicious cycle of crime, prison, and violence in low-income communities.
