City Year was founded in 1988 on the belief that young people can change the world. City Year unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. As tutors, mentors and role models, these diverse young leaders help children stay in school and on track, and transform schools and communities across the United States, as well as through international affiliates in Johannesburg, South Africa and London, England. By giving AmeriCorps members the skills and opportunities to serve in schools and neighborhoods across the country, City Year seeks to: help children succeed; build stronger communities; break down social barriers; develop young leaders; and foster active citizenship.
At City Year, we believe education has the power to help every child reach his or her potential. However, in high-poverty communities there are external factors and obstacles students are faced with every day that can interfere with their ability to both get to school and be ready and able to learn. But it's these students who need a bit of extra, individualized support. But there's a gap between the kind of help they need and the support the schools are designed to provide. At City Year, we partner with most at-risk schools to help bridge the gap between what their students need and what the schools are designed to provide. In doing so, we're helping students reach their full potential and graduate high school in communities all across America.
We truly believe all kids can succeed, and each one of them can read their full potential.
City Year Americorps members serve as leaders, role models and mentors for our students in and outside the classroom.
Americorps members stay until the last bell rings and prepare their students for the next day. They help with tutoring and mentoring in the after school space.
Our model of Civic Engagement is one that we whole hardheartedly believe in. We believe that our students should walk into their school and feel pride of what they see! We love completing beautification projects in both schools we serve and in ones we do not, because our community is one.
Our school teams are committed to creating a positive environment for staff, faculty, students and the community.
Whole School Whole Child
City Year supports students by improving academic achievement, building social emotional skills, and helping to transform the nation's low-performing schools. In collaboration with a team of education researchers and practitioners, City Year designed and launched its evidence based Whole School Whole Child (WSWC) model in 2006. The model channels City Year's unique assets - well-trained, idealistic young people - toward building the nation's graduation pipeline by helping students stay on track to graduate high school. AmeriCorps members are recruited, trained, and deployed to serve in schools from before the first bell rings until the last student leaves at the end of the day, providing academic support, attendance support, behavior coaching, positive school climate and extended learning programming.
