Every 2nd Friday of each month, Jazz Encounters bridges generations of musicians through live performance and jam sessions. Young musicians are invited to play alongside established local and national artists, in an informal setting, with the common purpose of establishing a relationship around music and its history. Nicole Yarling, violinist, vocalist and music educator leads the sessions.
WDNA Music Scholarship Program
The WDNA Music Scholarship Program is an ongoing effort designed to further the music education for students studying jazz in South Florida. In 2017, WDNA awarded six scholarships to local students to attend the prestigious Litchfield Jazz Camp in Connecticut. Students received round trip airfare; tuition & study materials; room & board; college credit; and the opportunity to perform at 2017 Litchfield Jazz Festival. In the past WDNA has also provided scholarships to the New York Jazz Symposium, at Snow College, Utah.
In addition to broadcasting and streaming a range of non-commercial music - jazz, Latin jazz, blues, reggae, Brazilian & world music - WDNA also programs live concert series in our Jazz Gallery, at least three times per month. The Jazz Gallery is a special venue space where musicians can explore, play original compositions, and connect with a listening audience. Local, national, and international artists treat music lovers to intimate performances. Regular concerts include the Fine Arts Concert Series, pairing visual and performing arts; Jazz Encounters, uniting generations of musicians through performance; Jazz @ WDNA, featuring a range of established and up & coming acts; and the Salsa Dance Party, featuring a live band and Afro-Cuban salsa.
Miami Downtown Jazz Festival
Thanks to the generous support of a Knight Arts Challenge, WDNA launched the Miami Downtown Jazz Festival (MDJF) in 2017, and celebrated a second festival this year. WDNA aspires for MDJF to be part of growing the diverse Miami jazz scene, making the city a place where people come to listen to great musical fusions and a place where musicians can play original and intelligent music for eager audiences.
