Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. We do this through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. We empower people with autism and their families with resources, online tools and information covering the life span. ABC's The Good Doctor cast talk about what they have learned about autism during the first season of the show.
What you see if often just a piece of the full picture. Perception can be misleading and the truth is a spectrum of experience -- inner, outer, spoken, and unsaid. This isn’t just true for people with autism. It’s true for everyone, everywhere. We’ve all felt the sting of being misjudged by how we appear, rather than seen for who we are. Everyone wants to be understood. In order for that to happen, we have to start looking at the full picture.

in April 2018, during Autism Awareness Month, our team presented safety resources & autism awareness tips to over 200 City of Miami Fire Fighters in hopes of improving interactions between children and adults on the autism spectrum and first responders. The presentation was very well received, and Autism Speaks South Florida hopes to collaborate with more first responder unions to continue creating more awareness! You can help make this possible!
In September, we invited local leaders and passionate advocacy supporters to meet with Lorri Unumb, Vice President of Government Affairs for Autism Speaks, and discuss what's going on in South Florida with changes in Medicaid coverages, victories in employers who are self-funding insurance coverage of autism for their employees, and other concerns affecting our community locally and at the federal level.
We look forward to having many more of these informational gatherings with our leadership and our community with your support!
Autism Speaks Resources Town Halls
Autism Speaks South Florida is looking to expand on community outreach by funding several Town Halls in 2019 focusing on Safety Resources and Adult Services. We are looking to partner with local communities, universities and service providers to bring crucial information about safety and adult services and resources to the community. These Town Halls focus on the critical resources that impact some of the most important, but often overlooked, facets of those touched with autism: adult life - including healthcare, financial planning, and legal concerns; as well as safety training for First Responders. With the help of supporters across the internet, we could help fund these two vital Town Halls several times throughout the year in welcoming communities that are looking for these resources, such as Doral, Greater Miami, Miami Beach or South Dade.
